Manchester, Connecticut, is a thriving small city in the growing eastern section of the Hartford region. The town has more than 1,000 acres of park land, a range of housing styles and prices in attractive neighborhoods, Manchester Memorial Hospital, Manchester Community College, an award-winning school system, performing arts organizations, libraries and friendly, community-spirited residents.

History:
In 1645, several families settled in the peaceful valley of Tunxis, commonly called the Tunxis Plantation, which was part of Farmington. This village was originally known as Northington, or the North Parish of Farmington.
The town of Avon was incorporated as a separate town in 1830, and took its name from the Avon River in England. At that time it had three hotels, harness, carriage and blacksmith shops and several stores. The Town Seal of Avon has the Towpath Canal as its central theme, which reflects Avon's early importance as an inland water port.
In 1830, the population numbered 1025 residents, increasing to 1057 by 1880, and 3171 by 1950. In 1960, the population numbered 5273 and in 1990, the count reached 14,000. The 2006 population is estimated at 17,041.
Manchester Public Schools
Manchester's 7,300 public school students are served by ten elementary schools, one middle school, Manchester High School, Manchester Regional Academy and a Head Start Program.
Recreation
The mission of the Manchester Parks and Recreation is to enhance the quality of life for all Manchester residents. This is accomplished by providing a comprehensive program of recreational opportunities for all ages, ability levels, and provides safe, attractive, well maintained, well managed parks and recreation facilities.

Manchester is home to one hospital, the Manchester Memorial Hospital.
Manchester is also home to Manchester Community College; a two-year communiy college that offers general education classes during the summer; and East Catholic High School; a highly rated parochial school.
Manchester is also known for The Shoppes at Buckland Hills, an enclosed shopping mall, The Plaza at Buckland Hills and the nearby strip mall, Buckland Plaza. In the last decade, the area surrounding the mall, which extends into the town of South Windsor, has been blanketed with numerous big box shopping outlets and plazas and quickly transformed into a shopping hub for the state's residents.
As a center of the silk industry in America from the late 19th through the mid-20th Century, the "Cheney Family" historic district showcases mills refurbished as apartments and includes nearby museums.
Manchester is perhaps most famous for its incredibly popular Manchester Road Race which is held every Thanksgiving Day. The race has over 10,000 participants yearly, as well as thousands of spectators. For New Englanders it is second in popularity only to the Boston Marathon. |
