History:

New England’s Rising Star is one of America’s original cities.  Founded by Dutch traders in the early 1600’s and established by the Reverend Thomas Hooker in 1636--- what started as a fort called the “House of Hope” is now a land of growth and opportunity for an enormously diverse population.  I encourage you to enjoy our rich blend of history, culture, and architectural gems--- with a progressive attitude towards business, education, and neighborhood economic development.

Hartford is the home of such internationally known treasures as the Wadsworth Atheneum (the nation’s first public museum), as well as attractions like the Mark Twain House, the Hartford Stage, the Bushnell Memorial, and the Artists Collective.  But ever since traders used the Connecticut River to conduct business, Hartford has been abuzz with insurance and financial transactions.  Companies such as Aetna, The Hartford Insurance Group, Phoenix, and St. Paul-Travelers have their roots here--- as does industrial giants like United Technologies.

Hartford Public Schools

There is no better place to get an education than the Greater Hartford region. From K-12, to graduate and post graduate courses, the region offers unparalleled educational options.

Recreation

The department's philosophy is to provide quality recreation and park activities to as many residents, at all age levels and variety of interests, as possible.  Members of the community are encouraged to contact the Recreation Office with ideas, suggestions for improvement, new programs, and constructive critique.  The staff has been and will continue to be receptive to resident communication and welcomes input.  Participation and cooperation between the department and the people it serves is a priority, valued and greatly appreciated.

Shopping

Avon is fortunate to be situated along Route 44, the commercial main street of the Farmington Valley. The unique “old world, new world” blend of quaint shops and nationally known stores offers more than one million square feet of retail shopping as well as historic and cultural venues.
