History:
The Town of Farmington was incorporated in 1645. Known as the "Mother Town", Farmington was partitioned into the towns of Avon, Bristol, Plainville, New Britain, Berlin, Southington, and Burlington. This history is reflected in the Town Seal. Today, Farmington comprises 28.7 square miles along the Farmington River. Farmington is a residential suburb in the Hartford Metropolitan area that has retained its distinctive character through maintenance of its historic districts and careful land use planning for the future
Farmington School System:
The Farmington Public School System is comprised of seven schools organized into four school levels. Four Elementary Schools serve children in grades kindergarten through grade 4. Students in grades 5 and 6 are served by West Woods Upper Elementary School. Irving A. Robbins Middle Schools serves all Farmington Students in grades 7 and 8. Farmington High School serves all students in grades 9-12.
Farmington is also home to several institutions of higher learning. The State run Tunxis Community College is located off Route 6. The University of Connecticut Health Center is home to the School of Medicine and the School of Dentistry.
Farmington is also home to Miss Porter's School a world-renowned private girls school located in on Route 10 in the village district.
Recreation
Farmington Recreation is dedicated to providing wholesome recreation and leisure activities for the enjoyment of all residents in the community. Recreation promotes good health, friendships, and opportunities for sharing family time. New challenges, outdoor adventures, positive competition, creativity and lifetime opportunities are other endless benefits. From the Farmington Valley Greenway where you can walk or bike the scenic trails, to first class art at the Hill-Stead Museum, there are numerous activities for both residents and visitors to Farmington.

Farmington has just about everything a visitor could want: antiques shops, first-rate accommodations, innovative restaurants, history, art and industrial museums, historic homes, and close to the Westfarms Mall.
The Westfarms Mall is a 1,310,000 square foot regional shopping center located seven miles southwest of Hartford, Connecticut. The shopping center straddles the towns of Farmington and West Hartford, and is conveniently located at the intersection of I-84 and Route 9. Westfarms offers a strong mix of stores and restaurants, many unique to its trade area including: Apple, babystyle, bebe, California Pizza Kitchen, The Coach Store, Discovery Channel Store, Harry and David, J.Crew, Janie and Jack, L'Oreal Paris, Nordstrom, Pottery Barn Kids, Rainforest Cafe, Restoration Hardware, Ross-Simons, Sephora, Timberland and more
Just above the Farmington Village, off Mountain Road, lies the Hill-Stead Museum. The estate, completed in 1901 and designed for Alfred Atmore Pope by his daughter Theodate Pope Riddle, one of the first woman American architects, is known for its Colonial Revival architecture. Now a museum, its 19 rooms hold a nationally-recognized collection of Impressionist paintings by such masters as Manet, Monet, Whistler, Degas and Cassatt. It is also the sight of the annual Sunken Garden Poetry Festival, and is a National Historic Landmark.
Miss Porter's School, an exclusive college preparatory school for girls, is in Farmington. The school, whose buildings occupy much of the village center, is a significant historic and cultural institution in its own right. Founded in 1843 by educational reformer Sarah Porter, Miss Porter’s has long been one of the most selective preparatory schools for girls in the country. Famous alumni include Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Lilly Pulitzer and members of the Bush, Vanderbilt, and Rockefeller families.
The town is also home to the University of Connecticut Health Center, where over 4,000 people work. The Health Center also houses John Dempsey Hospital. The hospital provides the only full-service emergency department in the Farmington Valley and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), one of only two in Connecticut. |
