History:
Canton was first settled in 1737 and was incorporated as a town in 1806. The Town developed from four distinct villages which remain today. Canton Center, Canton, Collinsville (originally named South Canton) and North Canton all retain many of their original historic structures. Canton Center and Collinsville each contain National Register Historic Districts filled with Colonial and Victorian homes. Collinsville is the seat of Town government and contains the Town Hall, Police Department and Canton Public Library. Principle industries include software development, manufacturing of brass, chemicals, electromagnetic clutches and brakes, moment of inertia measuring instruments, plastic components, and wrought iron.
Canton Public Schools
Canton spends $10,468 per pupil educating its young people, ranking it 98th out of Connecticut's 166 audited school districts.
Recreation
Tucked away off the north side of Route 44 is the Roaring Brook Nature Center, a great place for hiking all year round. It also has guided nature walks, folk performances and programs for kids. The Mills Pond Recreation Area, between Canton Village Green and Collinsville, has soccer fields, tennis courts, a playscape, and the town pool. Just behind it is the Canton High School and Middle School that are part of the town’s comprehensive school improvement program.
Places of Interest
The heart of Canton is the village of Collinsville. Surrounded by steep hills that curl around the Farmington River, it is Canton’s own distinctive downtown. You can rent a canoe or kyak and take it out on a stretch of flat water or shop at the charming gift shops or eat at one of the many restaurants.
Canton Village proper life is centered on Route 44, also called the Albany Turnpike. Along this modern commercial strip are restaurants and all kinds of unique shops.
The Shoppes at Farmington Valley is the largest retail development the area has seen in more than five years. Though there may have initially been some conflicting opinions about the impact of the Shoppes on Canton’s small town legacy, it’s become a popular destination.
