The Town of West Hartford encompasses 22.2 square miles and has a population of 61,046 (2000 Census). The town is a residential suburb of the Hartford metropolitan area. The Town encompasses a full range of quality housing from starter homes to luxury estates. West Hartford boasts a strong retail and service business sector as well as an impressive network of award-winning recreational facilities and offers a year-round calendar of social and cultural events.

History:
West Hartford is a town located in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The town was incorporated in 1854. Prior to that date, the town was a parish of Hartford. West Hartford is accessible by major thoroughfares including Interstate 84 which passes through the mid-southern portion of town and U.S. Route 44 which passes through the town from Hartford to Avon Mountain.
As of 2004, the town had an estimated total population of 64,255. The town is a mostly up market suburb of Hartford. The town has a vibrant downtown called West Hartford Center. This area is centered around Farmington Avenue and South/North Main Street. West Hartford Center has been the community's hub since the late 1600s.
The diversity of the West Hartford town can be shown by its many neighborhoods. The Farmington Avenue area is very diverse, containing the state's largest Jewish and the town's largest Black community. Asians and Hispanics are huge groups, found through the town. Greater Hartford's biggest Asian population resides in West Hartford.
West Hartford Public Schools
The West Hartford school system has been recognized for years as one of the best in the state. West Hartford is fortunate to have a wonderful mix of private and public educational institutions. West Hartford Public Schools has two high schools, three middle schools and 11 elementary schools. There are eight higher learning centers, 17 private and parochial elementary through high schools, and 31 preschool and daycare facilities, as well as three colleges including; the Uiversity of Connecticut Greater Hartford Campus, the University of Hartford and Saint Joseph College.
In 2006 Money Magazine ranked West Hartford as the 10th most educated town in the United States, as measured by the percentage of town residents holding graduate or professional degrees. Connecticut Magazine ranked West Hartford Public Schools first among all the cities and towns in Connecticut and for its population class (50,000+), and second overall.
Recreation
West Hartford is committed to providing area residents with recreational activities that are accessible, affordable, enjoyable and supportive of a healthy way of life. Under the management of Leisure Services, the facilities offer hundreds of high quality recreational and instructional opportunities for people of all ages, interests and abilities. The Town's annual two-day fair, Celebrate! West Hartford, is coordinated by this department. Over 50,000 people attend the fair each year.
Points of Interest
West Hartford is rich in history and new beginnings. While many of West Hartford's points of interests are found along North and South Main Street, visitors will discover wonderful shops and sites in some unique pockets of town.
On our eastern border you'll find the world-renown Elizabeth Park rose gardens in full bloom in June and thousands of tulips and daffodils in March and April. In the northwest corner, get back to nature by hiking the trails at the MDC reservoirs or visiting the demonstration farm at Westmoor Park.
In the central areas of town, you'll discover the birthplace of Noah Webster, the award-winning Rockledge Golf Club the Children's Museum of Connecticut, the Connecticut Veterans Memorial and the Park Road Playhouse.
West Hartford Center has been the community's hub since the late 1600s. The unhurried atmosphere encourages you to park and walk along the tree-lined, brick sidewalks and stop by the fine specialty shops, restaurants, coffee shops and one-of-a-kind boutiques. The variety of the 140 shops is world class, including toys, art galleries, book shops, a doggy bakery, jewelry stores, distinctive gift shops, home furnishings, and upscale clothing stores with the latest fashions. The center is being redefined with the addition of Blue Back Square, a more than 550,000-square-foot mixed-use development that will expand and enhance this dynamic region.
In the southern end of town, visit the historic Sarah Whitman Hooker House, a carefully restored early 18th century mansion house, the Art League Galleries, an indoor ice skating rink and 9-hole golf course and the Elmwood Center shopping district. There is a wealth of shopping opportunities, from neighborhood stores to regional shopping centers including the renowned West Hartford Center and Westfarms Mall.
